Cartographic Skills GIS 3015

 Process Summary
Map 1
1.      Opened new instance of ArcGIS
2.      added stat_pop.shp
3.      clicked properties of the .shp> selected Symbology tab
4.      select Quantities>Graduated colors> selected pchange under Value field
5.      select natural breaks
6.      rounded the data and deleted extra digits
7.      Chose proper color ramp
8.      Added all map elements
9.      Exported to .ai file and named it USA_cloropleth.ai
10.  Opened the exported file in CS4
11.  Layered the states separately from map element but left the scale within the state layer
12.  Rearranged all map layers for proper view and added text
13.  Exported as a .jpeg
Process Summary
Map 2
1.      Opened tab.xls file and rearranged the data to break down by region and division
2.      Totaled the 2000 population and 1990 population for each  division
3.      Subtracted the totals of each division of 2000 and 1990 and divided those totals by the 1990 total value. Used this formula example to convert the percentage change: =((C2-D2)/D2)
4.      Formatted the caculated data to percentage by right clicking>format>percentage
5.      Divided each percentage by 5 in order to find the high to low value for each break
6.      In CS4 I used the Map 1 data and added grayscale to the legend
7.      Changed the data in the legend to fit the low to high values previously caculated in excel sheet
8.      Highlighted each state and adjusted it color to fit the proper color for each division’s color value
9.      Added text for each division
10.  Exported as a .jpeg
